Publisher Reviews: Sharing a Sci-Fi Story with Black House Comics

This week’s listing is an Australian publisher of graphic novels and comics called Black House Comics. With 10 titles under their belt, and a spot at the 2013 Supanova, this is a company with potential and increasing exposure in Australia’s comic scene.

Currently searching for submissions for their After The World magazine (a sample of which can be downloaded for free), Black House Comics is looking for stories, 1000 to 5000 words long, set within a shared ‘zombie’ universe. Payment is offered, however there is a set number of available slots per episode, and only 6 per year, so competition may be tight. They are also only currently accepting from Australian authors, and strongly encourage women to apply.

From their submission page:

All submissions should be made to the editor at and include:

  • Your name and contact details;
  • Any pertinent CV stuff – let us know if you have an Oscar (don’t laugh);
  • What genre your story fits into – or doesn’t;
  • How long it is;
  • A short synopsis – please no more than 50 words. An example would be A mining ship discovers a strange alien who impregnates the crew with its parasitic young. It is up to one woman to stop the alien reaching earth;
  • A copy of your story in a Word document. We are not fussy on formatting but standard formatting should apply. Stories with no name or address on the title page will not be read. Or it might be read but we won’t know who wrote them and it will be a shame.

Response time is on average 3 to 4 weeks, and copyright/publication rights remain with the author.
